Glenwood Cemetery Project
February 14, 2007
To The Editor
Beacon Villager
Dear Jesse,
I am very pleased to announce that I am spearheading a group of interested people in Maynard called, The Friends of Glenwood Cemetery. We are made up of residents, town officials and business owners who want to see improvements made and preservation insured to protect to our beautiful and nationally historic registered cemetery.
The Glenwood Cemetery is located at the intersection of Parker Street and Great Road in Maynard and its establishment was the first significant civic effort for the newly incorporated town in 1871.
The cemetery contains about 55 open space acres and contains the remains of prominent residents of town including relatives of Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Pierce, Isaac Davis, members of the original secret service, as well as Civil and Spanish American War veterans.
The truth is that the cemetery grounds, trees and fences are desperately needing maintenance, improvements and long term care. I am enthusiastic about and see a great vision for the future of what we can do to bring about that which is necessary, respectful and in keeping with State and local by-laws to improve, preserve and protect this centerpiece of open space and sacred burial ground in Maynard.
There has been so much negative and controversial news lately about the circumstances facing the residents of the Town of Maynard. I believe that this endeavor will be a very positive, enthusiastic and valuable project for our friends to spend time, effort and money on. I also believe that it will stimulate cooperative community and civic group involvement that may be just what Maynard needs in this time of uncertainty.
I invite the citizens, officials and those concerned in Maynard to join with us at our next meeting to help bring the positive goals of the Friends of Maynard Cemetery to fruition.
We meet on Wednesday, February 28th at 4PM in room 101 at the Town Hall.
Sincerely,
Daniel Cetrone
